Description
I shot this late sunset in a past weekend when I was walking by the beach with my girlfriend and some friends. This means I didn't use a tripod and it was getting very dark. This was shot in RAW with a compact Canon PowerShot A640 and post-processed in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.
Anyway, I don't know if it's the fact that I'm using a compact camera and not a dSLR but the photo looks too grainy and I have a question for the experts. Like I said, no tripod was used and the photo was taken with an exposure of 1/20s, aperture of f2,8 and ISO 100. Is the problem on my camera that has a small sensor for being a compact, on the settings used and the fact that I did not have a tripod to increase the exposure duration or maybe both?
By the way, this was shot in my lovely city, Vila do Conde, Portugal.

If you try to handhold anything below 1/30 it will, unless you are verys stable on your hands, get a but blurry.
Composition is half-half which could be improved imo by cropping a bit from the top of the sky.
If you don't have a tripod maybe you can find a wall or a rock to put your camera on and try longer exposure time in conjunction with higher aparture value.
Normally going for a higher iso will give some noise. You have noise already at iso100. You could still use a noise reduction software to "clean" it off.

It is grainy, and I am just wondering if the camera has a auto iso setting ?
as for the exposure time, the rule is simple, lens length should be shorter than the exposure. Let me explain it in 35mm terms, your shooting with a 50mm lens so you use at least 1/60 second exposure, lens length is less than exposure.. so 200mm means at least 1/200sec or more..
you could carry a small monopod ? its light and removes any up and down movement..
I like the image and the composition but not the watermark !
A smaller/bigger number aparture would not have helped you here as the exposure would have been to long to hand hold.. you got away with it !

Actually, I shake a lot overall lol... but like you said, I was supporting myself on some rocks, otherwise, trust me, this photo wasn't here. Like I said, I used Lightroom, but I didn't want to take a lot of noise because the original 10mpx image would look more like a painting and I didn't really like the effect.
What do you mean about the ISO? I took the value from Lightroom which was read from the EXIF I believe. And yes, the camera as an Auto ISO setting but I don't think I can select it using the Manual, Tv or Av modes, so... I didn't use a lower ISO because the image would be too dark and I was missing the tripod.
I'll have to buy one of those monopods or even a little tripod like this. About the watermark, well, that's just for photography show off reasons, the original image (if I want to print a poster in the future
